Georgian Bifold Doors in Twickenham

Here we have an extension incorporating, unusually, inward opening bifold doors with the traditionally styled glazing bars. What started off as a project to fit one set of Bifold doors and a single door to the side ended up transforming the kitchen dining space of this beautiful home in Twickenham.

The customer’s ambitious idea was to build out the kitchen area and incorporate sets of bifolding doors on two elevations, as well as fixed lights with a window seat. The result is an elegant solution that opened up the dining area directly onto the patio and lawn. The doors tuck away inside meaning they do not intrude onto the garden space.

The detail

The traditional detailing, including the glazing bars and soft lines of the curved facia above the doors, meant the finished look retained a period charm without compromising the modern concept of opening up the living space with bifold doors. This modern extension with feature sandstone surrounds was quite unique in that the windows and doors were all finished with a detailed sandstone surround including columns and pediments as well as a feature stone arch.

Woodland manufactured the windows and doors in conjunction with the contractor on site and the stonemason off-site. This close co-ordination meant the site was left open for the minimum amount of time so the project could progress as quickly and smoothly as possible.

The look of the windows and doors was an important element and was not straightforward as there were doors, sash windows and casement windows all adjacent. Maintaining consistent site lines across all elements was an important part of ensuring the finish complimented the precision detailing on the rest of the project.
